Son-in-law charged for mob boss murder

Rocco Zito gunned down Friday evening, police say

Toronto mob boss Rocco Zito was the victim of an alleged domestic altercation involving his son-in-law on Friday evening, police say.

Zito died at age 87 in his bungalow home on Playfair Avenue with his family on Jan. 29. Reportedly a founding member of La Camera De Controllo, which acted as the governing body for Toronto’s inner Mafia circles, Zito was an influential persona of the Mafia located in the GTA.

Toronto Police tweeted the announcement of Zito’s death, including the perpetrator on Friday.

Zito’s son-in-law, Domenico Scopelliti, 51, is charged with first-degree murder after the altercation on Friday.

It is reported that Zito has connections to the Ndrangheta, a criminal organization that originated in Calabria, Italy, and operates the largest cocaine smuggling network in Europe.

It is suspected that Zito has long been retired and not as active as in his younger days, but still maintaining a level of influence over local mob leaders.

In 1986 Zito was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for shooting photo studio owner, Rosario Sciarrino, over loan payments.
