Toronto staggers through snowstorm

Tuesday snowfall makes for difficult cleanup and commute

On Wednesday morning, Toronto woke up buried in snow.

The biggest snowfall of the season struck Toronto on Tuesday night, blanketing the city in over 20 centimetres of snow, leaving buses rescheduled and flights cancelled.

As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, about 240 flights to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport were cancelled.

All Go Transit trains and buses were running on an adjusted schedule and some buses were cancelled entirely.

Many commuters had to wake up early to dig their cars out.

“I live a bit further up North, so the snow that piled on my driveway was crazy,” said GTA resident Jared Li. “I couldn’t back out of the garage until I shovelled some of it away, and that took us over an hour,”

On Wednesday morning there were about 200 reported collisions in the Greater Toronto area over the past 24 hours, with many more going unreported, said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

To add the icing on top, an extreme cold weather alert was issued for Toronto with an expected temperature of -14 C on Wednesday night.

“So much for a mild winter,” Li said.

But Toronto residents can look ahead, as temperatures are forecasted to be in the double digits next week.

This extreme weather alert may be the last of this winter, leaving the 2015–16 winter with a total of 11 compared to 39 in the 2014–15 season.
