Elderly pedestrian hit by car

Police say a motorist was involved in a collision with another car on Pape Avenue on Monday afternoon — and then his car careened into an elderly pedestrian.

The accident occurred on Pape near Mortimer Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. The pedestrian was a man in his 80s who was crossing the street.

“It happened fast,” said Brice Hall, who witnessed the accident. Hall was walking to his home on Pape when it occurred, and he was among a group of people who tended to the pedestrian while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

“It’s easy to digest when you see it on TV, but when it happens in front of your eyes, it’s hard to believe,” he said.

Police said the pedestrian has non life-threatening injuries.

Const. Clint Stibbe said more than 1,800 pedestrians are hit every year on Toronto streets — and last year, 60 died as a result of their injuries.

George Mina, 22, appeared in court on Tuesday, facing charges of driving under suspension and causing an accident resulting in bodily harm.
