NDP criticizes Ontario government hydro rebate and child care plans

The leader of the NDP believes the Liberal government plan for hydro rebates and child care falls short of Ontario families’ expectations.

In Monday’s throne speech, the Wynne government announced an eight per cent hydro rebate to Ontarians and unveiled its plan to open 100,000 new child care spaces in 2017.

Andrea Horwath, the Ontario NDP leader, questioned the seriousness of the Liberal plan. She acknowledged the efforts to improve child care, but explained how expensive it will be for Ontario families, putting the question to MPP Deborah Matthews (London North Centre).

“Child care, which this Deputy Premier seems to want to talk about a lot, remains far too expensive for far too many families, and that’s not changing,” Horwath said.

Acting Premier Matthews addressed the benefits of spending money on child care facilities which families with young children would find helpful.

“We made choices to invest in infrastructure, to invest in our young people through education, to invest in our health care system,” Matthews said.

Horwath (Hamilton Centre) doesn’t believe the Wynne government is doing its part to make changes.

“It is not a reset. It is yet another disappointment. Why is this government letting people down yet again?” Horwath asked through the speaker.
