Internationally renowned artist to make city project

Carlaw and Dundas to receive installation

Toronto artist and designer Pierre Poussin has been chosen by a jury to create a public art installation which will be displayed at Carlaw Avenue and Dundas Street East. The project is to begin construction next summer.

Poussin’s design, called Black Obelisk, features an obelisk just over nine metres tall. It has laser-cut patterns alongside local maps made of steel, showing different time periods. LED lights will also be included.

“The jury was captivated by Pierre’s creativity and thoughtful expression of the site,” jury chair Catherine Williams said in a City of Toronto news release. “We had excellent submissions but Pierre’s was a clear winner and we look forward to seeing the final design and construction.”

Poussin is internationally recognized for his works from the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver. His portfolio includes public art installations and he has worked with Walt Disney Corp. and Princeton University.

“This is an exciting moment for the Carlaw and Dundas neighbourhood, our ward and the city,” city councillor Paula Fletcher said. “Pierre Poussin’s obelisk marker will become an iconic entrance feature to the neighbourhood. His wonderful design speaks to the industrial character and vibrancy of this neighbourhood and also our great city.”
