The province’s Special Investigation Unit is investigating the death of a man struck by a vehicle in what police are calling a hit and run Wednesday.

A Toronto police officer had attempted to stop a vehicle on Eglinton Avenue East at about 11:30 a.m., according to SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro.

The vehicle reportedly refused to stop and the officer followed. A short time later, the vehicle struck a man cutting concrete just west of the intersection of Eglinton and Midland.

An ambulance attended but the man was pronounced dead.

The SIU has assigned seven investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision deconstructionist to probe the incident.

SIU is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or captured it on video to contact their lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
