Anti-Trump protest drawing support in Toronto

Facebook shows thousands heading to Rally Saturday

Thousands plan to join the anti-Trump protest on Saturday in downtown Toronto, according to the rally’s Facebook page.

The event page for Rally Against Trump has been drawing attentions from Torontonians this week, with nearly 3,000 indicating they intend to go and more than 7,000 people showing interest in participating — and both numbers going up.

The group will gather at Nathan Phillip Square at 1 p.m and march down to Trump Tower. Organizers post on the event page that all are welcomed and ask participants to act peacefully.

“I’m against the person in office who is woefully unqualified, xenophobic, racist, misogynistic, classist, and a demagogue,” says Nazbah Tom, who plans to attend. “As a trans person, my rights would be targeted and my safety compromised furthermore.”

Tom, a first nation American living in Toronto, says she’s afraid the relationship between the U.S. government and the Navajos will be more disregarded than it already is under the Obama administration.

She says she is also worried over the future of LGBTQ community under Trump.

“His vice president [Mike Pence] believes that LGBTQ folks can be cured of homosexuality via electroshock therapy,” Tom says. “With this kind of thinking, LGBTQ community will face difficulty and violence within many systems (healthcare, mental health, law, etc.).”

Tom says protests let allies in the U.S. know Canadians stand with them against Trump.

“We will protest and do other actions in order to make his administration incredibly frustrated and to fight his every move,” she says.
