Ryan Reynolds pays homage to SickKids

Winning entertainer dedicates Critics' Choice Award to Toronto hospital

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds dedicated his Critics’ Choice award to The Hospital for Sick Children on Sunday night.

Reynolds, 40, won entertainer of the year, in part for his role in the 2016 superhero movie Deadpool, which he had worked on for over a decade.

Deadpool was an 11-year odyssey for me to get up here. It resonated with a lot of people,” Reynolds said. “The character had cancer and some of the people that this character resonated with were sick kids.”

After accepting his award, the Vancouver native dedicated his honour to the Make-a-Wish foundation and the SickKids Foundation, as well as paying tribute to two young fans of his who recently passed away after battles with cancer.

“I would also like to dedicate this award to the memories of my friends Connor McGrath and Grace Bowen. They didn’t lose the battle, they started a fight and it’s up to us to finish it.”
