GO Transit driver charged with impaired driving

Arrested after driving bus from Union Station to Square One while appearing intoxicated, Peel police say

A bus driver has been charged with impaired driving, police say.

On Friday night a GO Transit bus driver, was arrested after he provided samples of his breath, according to Const. Mark Fischer, spokesperson for the Peel Regional Police.

“The accused blew in the area of 280mg/100ml,” Fischer said.

The driver was charged with impaired driving and excess blood alcohol over 80 milligrams.

The driver was en route to Square One bus terminal from Union station.

Anne Marie Aikins, a spokesperson for Metrolinx, tweeted about the incident, saying, “Last night for 1st time in @GOtransit history we are disappointed to report that a bus driver was charged with impaired driving.”

In an email, Aikins said that a GO Transit bus supervisor saw the driver entering Square One, seemingly intoxicated at the end of his shift. The supervision proceeded to contact police to ensure the safety of the public.

“The nine-year driver was immediately suspended from duty and we are conducting an internal investigation.” Aikins said.

Aikins added Metrolinx has a zero tolerance approach to drinking and driving.

The driver will make an appearance in court on April 25.
