Denis Shapovalov advances to quarter-finals at Stockholm Open

Richmond Hill native is one of only two seeded players left in the draw

Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarter-finals of the ATP Tour Stockholm Open in Sweden on Thursday, defeating Australian Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 7-6 (3).

The 20-year-old won 92 per cent of his points on his first serve and saved four of five break-point chances against the 90th-ranked Popyrin.

Shapovalov will face German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the quarter-finals on Friday. Stebe topped Mikael Ymer of Sweden 6-0, 7-6 (5) in their quarter-final match on Thursday.

Shapovalov is ranked 34th  in the world and is the No. 4 seed at the tournament. He is looking to win his first ATP title.

The Richmond Hill native is one of only two seeded players left in the draw, joined by No. 5 Pablo Carreno Busta.

Shapovalov also qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals. The left-hander, who debuted at the inaugural 21-and-under event in 2017, secured his place when Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic lost in Moscow.
