Canadians move to goalball quarters, with Israel next opponent

Canada will face Israel in the quarterfinals of women’s Paralympic goalball on Monday, after coming to a 0-0 draw with South Korea, Sunday morning.

Top scorers Emma Reinke and Amy Burk could not find the back of the net for the Canadians during a grueling defensive match for both sides.

Canada (1-1-1) and South Korea (1-1-1) came into the contest looking to gain the upper hand on each other, as the pair sat tied for second place in pool D.

As the final round robin clash progressed, it was evident that it was going to come down to who would make the first mistake. Neither side bent — the teams were flawless on the defensive side of the ball.

The throws were 98-97 in favour of Canada.

Head coach for the Canucks, Trent Farebrother, opted to sub in Maryam Salehizadeh for Burk with five-minutes remaining in the second half, attempting to ignite the offence.

Their only switch of the day did not pay off, as her nine attempts were unsuccessful, and the Canadians settled for just one point.

The preliminaries come to a close with the two teams now at 4 points, but Canada holds the tiebreaker over South Korea in point differential – thanks to their blowout 10-0 win to begin the tournament vs. France.

Reinke and the Canadians had no troubles scoring in their opener, demolishing the hosts via the mercy rule, but as Canada fell to Japan 2-1 on Friday, they would net just one goal in their final two games.

Offensively the team will need to lean more on its 34-year-old captain in Burk, now competing in her fifth Paralympic games. She has been the cornerstone of this roster for nearly two decades and looks to lead Canada back on to the podium since a gold medal in 2004.

Canada’s best finish at the Paralympics since 2008 is fifth place — in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

The quarter final matchup is set for 9:15 a.m. ET on Monday, at the South Paris Arena.
