Canada falls to Israel in goalball quarters, ending Paris Paralympics run

The journey for the Canadian women’s goalball team in the Paris Paralympics has come to an end.

Canada was eliminated after falling to Israel 5-1 in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, marking a disappointing exit for the team.

This is the same six-players squad that finished bottom of their group and ended the tournament ranked in ninth place three years ago in Tokyo.

Despite their hopes for a stronger performance in Paris after winning a gold in the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games, the Canadians struggled to find a rhythm, especially on offence.

Team Captain Amy Burk scored the only goal for the red and white in the Round of eight, and it was not enough to push them into the top four.

Israel sharpshooter Lihi Ben David was too much to handle for the Canadian defence, as she was dominant throughout, scoring four times.

The match began with an early goal from the Israel flag bearer, who put her side up 1-0 just 19 seconds in, finding the gap between Whitney Bogart and Emma Reinke with a powerful rotation throw.

Ben David continued to be a threat, adding another one to give her team a 2-0 lead five minutes later. Her fast throw was initially deflected by Reinke, but the ball kept rolling into the net as Burk failed to keep it alive.

With 54 seconds left before the break, a Ben David hard shot completed the first half hat-trick performance as the worried Canadians trailed 3-0.

With their tournament lives on the line, Canada showed some fight, coming out with a little momentum at the start of the final 12 minutes. Burk got one back for the Canadians on their first throw in the second half.

The Charlottetown native scored with a bouncing ball which hit the right post and went into the net, making it 3-1.

However,  Canada could not maintain their pace for a potential comeback as Israel responded quickly and restored the three-goal advantage. Or Mizrahi’s bouncing throw that deflected off Bogart’s foot and rolled into the net gave her team a 4-1 lead.

Ben David then sealed the victory with her fourth goal by a perfect throw with 6:11 left, the ball finding the back of the net without touching any Canadian defenders, bringing the final score to 5-1.

The Canadian offence has disappeared since the 10-0 opening victory against host France, only scored two goals in three games since.

Canada came into the quarterfinal as the second seed of Pool D after losing to world number two ranked Japan in a close one, and a tie with Republic of Korea on Sunday.
