Shaw’s Paralympic tennis run ended by Netherland’s Vink, at Roland Garros

Rob Shaw’s second Paralympics has come to an end, going down in straight sets to second-ranked Dutchman Neils Vink, in the wheelchair tennis quad singles quarter-finals.

The Canadian fell 6-0, 6-0 to one of the world’s top players.

This comes at the heels of a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win by the Canadian over Ymanitu Silva of Brazil in the first round, on the famed clay courts at Roland Garros.

The 36-year-old started off competitively in the first game of the first set. After that, Vink, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, including this summer at Wimbledon, took over.

Vink had 34 service winners overall compared to Shaw’s six. That included three aces. Shaw was unable to produce any of his own.

The Dutchman consistently applied pressure on the return and never gave Shaw a chance to keep a steady eye on his (Vink’s) serve.  For the North Bay-native, answering the Dutch athlete’s serves proved to be a demanding task as Shaw was six-of-30 in receiving points.

The burden was bearing heavily for Shaw as he had committed 12 unforced errors.

Before the Paralympics began, Shaw was ranked eighth in the wheelchair quad division following his first career ITF Series 1 victory at the Swiss Open in July.

Had he won this match, this would have been his seventh win over a player in the top 5.

Despite the result, reaching the quarter-finals was the best Paralympic result in Shaw’s career. His first-round win over Silva was his first-ever match win at the Paralympics.
