While Greg Stewart was adding another gold medal to his shot put resume on Wednesday, two other Canadian field athletes entered the circle in their events.
Charlotte Bolton
Charlotte Bolton (Tillsonburg, Ont.) finished sixth with a best throw of 28.53 metres in the women’s F41 Discus Throw final.
Tunisia’s Raoua Tlili – in her fifth Paralympics – threw a season-best 36.55 metres to capture her fifth consecutive gold medal. Morocco’s Karim Youssra won silver at 36.46 metres, and Ecuador’s Estefany Gisela Lopez Macas claimed bronze at 30.89 metres.
The 21-year-old competed in the F41 Shot Put event, where she finished 10th on Friday.
Bolton made her Paralympic debut in 2021 at Tokyo, where she placed sixth in both discus and shot put events and was the youngest member of Canada’s para athletic squad at 18.
She captured a bronze medal in discus at the 2023 ParaPan American Championships in Santiago, Chile.
Katie Pegg
Katie Pegg (Markham, Ont.) made her Paralympic debut in the women’s F46 shot put event with a best throw of 10.72 metres, good for seventh place.
Gold medallist Noelle Malkamaki, of USA, set a world-record of 14.06 metres, silver medallist Mariia Shpatkivska of Ukraine tossed 12.35 metres, and bronze medallist Holly Robinson of Australia at 11.88 metres.
Pegg qualified for the Games in June with a win in F46 shot put at the 2024 Canadian Track and Field Championships.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced her to take a hiatus, before returning to the shot circle while attending Saint Mary’s University, in Halifax.
Pegg also played football for eight years and was the only female athlete in the league. She was a defensive lineman for the Scarborough Thunder.
