Canada’s Gagné loses bronze-medal match in Paralympic judo

Published on

Canada’s Priscilla Gagné lost to Argentina’s Paula Karina Gomez 11-1 in the Para judo women’s 57kg (J1) bronze-medal contest Thursday in Paris.

Gagné, who won a silver medal in the 52kg division at Tokyo 2021 and is currently ranked fourth in the world, was the clear aggressor, controlling the pace and dominating grips throughout the bout.

With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the match went into golden score, judo’s equivalent of overtime. The Sarnia, Ont., native received three shido (yellow cards) during the golden score period, including two for non-combativity and another for a false attack, resulting in an automatic loss for the Canadian.

The 38-year-old finished in fifth place, while China’s Shi Yijie beat Team USA’s Liana Mutia in the gold-medal match. Anzhela Havrysiuk of Ukraine won the division’s other bronze medal. The Paralympics awards two bronze medals due to there being repechage rounds, resulting in the two semifinal losers facing off against the top two repechage round finishers in a pair of bronze-medal matches.

Gagné finished with a 1-2 record in Paris. She earned a dominant 10-0 victory in the opening round against Brazil’s Larissa Oliveira earlier on Thursday, but fell to gold-medal winner Shi 10-0 in the semifinal after receiving a bye for the quarter-final.
