Para Swim Day 8 Recap: Canada has up and down day in pool

Published on

It was a busy day in the pool for Canada at the Paralympic Games.

Aurelie Rivard won her first gold of the Games on Thursday, while Tess Routliffe won bronze in the 100m breaststroke (SB7).

Three more athletes competed in individual races, along with a mixed medley relay.

Mary Jibb finishes seventh in 200m medley

Mary Jibb of Bracebridge, Ont., placed seventh in the women’s 200m individual medley (SM9), finishing with a time of 2:41.70.

Zsofia Konkoly from Hungary won gold with a time of 2:33.31, while two Spanish swimmers rounded out the podium. Nuria Marques Soto took silver (2:34.19) and Anastasiya Dmytriv Dmytriv won bronze (2:37.64).

Jibb used her strong butterfly stroke in the first 50m to get into third place, where she would sit at the turn after 100m. The 17-year-old did not have the pace with the breaststroke to remain at the top of the pack and fell to fifth heading into the final 50m.

This is the first Paralympics Games for Jibb, who also competed in the women’s 100m backstroke (S9) on Tuesday, finishing fifth.

Katarina Roxon’s medal streak comes to an end

Katarina Roxon did not qualify for the final round in the women’s 200m individual medley (SM9) with a time of 2:48.61.

The swim was the third and final for Roxon, who was unable to reach the podium. It ends a medal streak that stretches back to the 2016 Games at Rio.

The 31-year-old was competing in her fifth Paralympic Games, becoming the first Canadian Para swimmer to accomplish the feat.

Roxon was Canada’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony last Wednesday.

Abi Tripp misses out on final

Abi Tripp did not qualify Thursday for the women’s 100m breaststroke (SB7) in her final swim at the Paris Games.

Racing in the same heat as Routliffe, the 23-year-old Tripp posted a time of 1:46.57, finishing fifth.

The Kingston, Ont., native’s best Paralympic result came at Rio 2016, where she placed sixth in the 400m freestyle.

Mixed 4X50m Medley Relay

Nikita Ens (Meadow Lake, Sask.), Shelby Newkirk (Saskatoon, Sask.), Sebastian Massabie (Surrey, B.C.) and Reid Maxwell (St. Albert, Alta.) participated in the mixed 4x50m medley relay Thursday, placing sixth in their heat with a time of 3:19.79.

It is the second Paralympic Games for Ens and Newkirk, and the first for Massabie and Maxwell. The 17-year-old Maxwell won a silver medal Wednesday in the men’s 400m freestyle (S8).

Massabie and Maxwell will be back in the pool Friday, while Newkirk will compete in the 100m backstroke (S6) on Saturday.
