Cleaning up — and smoothing over

There has been occasional tension between nearby residents and occupants of the youth shelter — formerly known as “Touchstone” and located at 1076 Pape Ave. So one of the stated intentions of the Kennedy community cleanup was to ease that tension.

Centennial students raise funds and profile of literacy

At a pub in East York, public relations student Rachael Kellogg is helping to raise the public profile of literacy. “It’s all the stuff I’m very passionate about,” she said. Recently, at the Fox and Fiddle restaurant on Danforth, a number of Centennial College Corporate Communications and Public Relations students organized a fundraiser for the Literature for Life charity.

61-year-old killed by tractor trailer

A 61-year-old woman was struck dead by a tractor trailer that was driven by a 38-year-old man attempting to make a right turn onto Markham Road from Finch Avenue East on March 4, police say.

No snow tires on TTC buses: Riders at risk?

Imagine being on your way somewhere and the TTC bus you’re in is not moving, because it can’t get up the hill in the snow. That is exactly what happened to many passengers on Monday February 2, when at least one bus on York Mills Road east of Yonge Street was struggling to get up the hill, due to the 22 centimetres of snow that walloped Southern Ontario overnight Sunday and into the morning commute. The TTC buses do not use snow tires.

Child seized in robbery spree

Girl 12, boy 14 arrested for robbery spree and abduction. A 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were arrested late Dec. 4 after allegedly committing multiple robberies and an abduction of a person under 14 years of age.
