Kamala Liyamage doesn’t go grocery shopping at a store. There aren’t any near her home, and that makes things difficult when she either has to carry all her bags back on her own, use the TTC or pay for a taxi ride. The 80-year-old’s trip goes from difficult to nearly impossible in the winter.
Walking into the Armenian Community Centre on the edge of Scarborough on any given day, you’re likely to see the atrium buzzing with meetings, fundraisers, young scouts marching about, and people having a relaxing chat over coffee at the cafe in the centre of it all. But walk in nowadays and you’ll see a table advertising the annual New Year’s party.
David Lewis started volunteering at Habitat for Humanity about five years after a chance encounter. Today he works on the charity’s salvage crew, taking out kitchens and bathrooms to supply ReStore, the organization’s retail arm. Arianna Dodds celebrated her ninth birthday in the rain. It was her first time participating in the Cub Run with her younger brother, 7-year-old Colin. Although the siblings had never completed the race before, they’re not new to running, according to their mom, Cori Dodds.
“We have a whole new hospital that’s hugely more capable of providing for the complex healthcare needs of these patients,” said Marian Walsh, “and enabling us to provide much more intensive rehabilitation in a building that’s been designed for that.”
“Sometimes I get really weird looks on the subway — ‘Why is this person staring at me?’ kind of thing,” Michael Tsouras said. “But I’m always looking at ‘How do I express that line in a pencil or a pen? How do I translate that?’”
“What we’re telling people is: ‘This is Canada’s first and most prestigious exhibition and it had a long and spectacularly infamous history.’ All of which we’re making up.”
Some of my ancestors died during— and others survived — the Armenian Genocide that began in 1915. This coming April 24 marks the 98th anniversary of that horrific event in history.
