OTTAWA — Tate Carey spent his week in Ottawa turning heads and establishing himself as one of the top arms in the class of 2024. The Great Lake Canadians product started two games at the Toronto Blue Jays Futures Showcase at Ottawa Stadium, throwing three innings while giving up no hits and no runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

TORONTO — Auston Matthews and William Nylander each scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs knocked off the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 in Saturday night preseason action at Scotiabank Arena. In the Leafs’ final tune-up game of 2022, Matthews scored his first and second goals of the preseason — both on the power play — helping Toronto (5-2) bounce back from a loss Friday night in Detroit (3-5).

Canney finding success in debut season with Tampa Spartans

University of Tampa Spartans pitcher Alex Canney is the first freshman to get a start on the mound for the program since the 2015-16 season.

The 19-year-old right-hander has gotten the ball in four games this season and put up excellent numbers.

He has a 2.70 ERA through 13.1 innings, where he has also amassed 18 strikeouts while only walking three batters.
