Transit fares set to rise

Fare increases approved Tuesday by the TTC were necessary to prevent more drastic cuts, the transit body’s chair says. As expected, Adam Giambrone and the rest of the board voted to raise fares for 2010 to address a sizeable shortfall in the TTC’s operating budget.

Threat of TTC fare hike prompts online backlash

Public transit riders may be asked to dig deeper in their pockets if a proposed fare hike is approved by a city committee on November 17, 2009. Riders could face fare increases of 25 cents, raising the total cost of the cash fare to $3.00. Tokens would increase similarly, up from $2.25 to $2.50 and the adult Metropass could increase to $126 per month, an increase of $17.

The auditorium at the Ontario Institute For Studies in Education (OISE) in Toronto was filled with Irish nationalism on Saturday. Posters with photos of men and women such as Michael Collins, an Irish revolutionary leader, and Bobby Sands, a hunger striker who was elected into the British government in the 1980s, were spread along the stage.
