Paul Henderson scores assist in Leaside rink fundraiser

The man who scored the “goal of the century” at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union skated into East York Sunday to assist the busy community rink. Canadian hockey hero and former Toronto Maple Leaf Paul Henderson brought his travelling Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour to Leaside Memorial Community Gardens to help raise funds for the arena’s expansion.

Fun on the rise for local climbers

Westgate, 38, started climbing 11 years ago when he was introduced to it by then co-workers at Mountain Equipment Co-op, where he worked in the cycling department. The Happier Climbers climb at the Toronto Climbing Academy near St. Clair and O’Connor Ave.

Expansion planned at Leaside Memorial

In a presentation detailing the expansion plans, architect Richard Dabrus of Wong Gregersen Dabrus Architects outlined an illustration of what the Leaside community can expect. Some features include a new ramp, lobby, ice rink, six team rooms and seating for 200 people.

Slow start doesn’t worry Saints

Head coach Kevin Jeffers said that with the constantly changing rosters in high school basketball – players graduating or transferring schools – his team is currently experiencing a period of self-discovery.
“They haven’t found their identity yet,” he said. “Once they get comfortable in their roles, we’ll be fine.”
