Evergreen chair says Don Valley super park an environmental statement

The chair of a planned new Toronto “super park” says the project arrives at a critical time in the life of the Don Valley region.

Mayor John Tory and representatives of Evergreen Brick Works announced the Don Valley River Park project Tuesday morning at a press conference. The mayor said the project calls for improvements in infrastructure from the Brick Works to Lake Ontario. Private donors will contribute $3.5 million of the $5 million required to launch the project.

Park enthusiast says Don River Valley needed facelift years ago

A Toronto hiker believes plans to revitalize the Don River Valley are long overdue.

On Tuesday, during a press conference at the Evergreen Brick Works, Mayor John Tory and Evergreen Brick Works announced details of a new Don River Valley Park. They referred to the project as the “super park,” which will stretch from the Brick Works south to Lake Ontario, making it, when completed, the second largest park in Toronto.

School teaches environmental responsibility

In this building, plastic water bottles are banned. Across an office wall is a painting of a plastic bottle and a sign that reads, “Ditch this scene. Use a canteen!” Beth Tomlinson hasn’t drunk from a plastic water bottle in years. She has been encouraging her students to do the same. “What we’re trying to do is encourage students to drink tap water,” Tomlinson said. “We basically, as a school, banned bottled water and then we actually created our own design for a canteen. We had them made and now we sell them.”

‘Healthy Hikers’ take last steps this Sunday

“I think it’s important to learn a bit about our local heritage and our local ecology. The ravines are a very important aspect of Toronto,” said Taylor Stone. “We have the largest ravine system of any city in the world. Getting Torontonians to appreciate it and appreciate that there is this potential to experience nature right in our backyards is important.”
