The debut of Costco in the Thorncliffe Park area has sparked residents’ concerns, a candidates meeting was told.
Four years ago, Jon Burnside came up just short in his bid to defeat long-time incumbent councillor John Parker in the Toronto municipal election. This fall, Burnside got his revenge. He surged past Parker Oct. 27, and became the only challenger to beat an incumbent.
Four years ago, in his first bid for city councillor for Ward 26, incumbent John Parker edged out first-time candidate Burnside by a paper-thin margin of two percentage points. This time around, Burnside emerged convincingly victorious — with 42.7 per cent of the vote in a six-candidate field.
Parker was the only incumbent Toronto city councillor to lose his seat. After two terms on council, he was defeated by Jon Burnside, the challenger who nipped at his heels, just 400 votes behind, in 2010.
Jon Burnside, who was endorsed earlier in the campaign by mayor-elect John Tory, beat out incumbent John Parker by more than 3,000 votes. He ended up garnering over 42 per cent of the ballots cast, with a total of 9,415 to Parker’s 6,167.
