Defeated NDP candidate blames the electorate fear factor

The NDP candidate, defeated by the Liberal running in the Scarborough North riding, says that fear played a major role in the public’s decision. Liberal Shaun Chen won the riding, Monday night, with 48 per cent of the votes. Conservative candidate Ravinder Malhi placed second with 27 per cent, followed by NDP candidate Rathika Sitsabaiesan with 22 per cent.

Winner in Newmarket-Aurora credits positive campaign

The winning candidate in Monday night’s federal election in Newmarket-Aurora credits a positive campaign for the victory. After 78 days, the longest campaign in modern Canadian history, the residents of Newmarket-Aurora chose Liberal candidate Kyle Peterson, who earned more than 45 per cent of votes, according to the CBC Canada Votes website.

Work for youth is new MP’s priority

The winner in Monday night’s federal election in the riding of Scarborough Centre has pledged financial support of jobs for young people as a priority. In the Oct. 19 vote, Liberal candidate Salma Zahid defeated Conservative incumbent Roxanne James. Zahid polled 51.1 per cent of ballots cast, according to the CBC Canada Votes website. James finished in second place with just over 30 per cent of votes, while NDP Alex Wilson earned 11.8 per cent of ballots.

In third place, NDP candidate offers to assist Liberal winner

Uxbridge offered her assistance to the elected Liberal. The newly configured riding, northeast of Toronto, saw Liberal Jennifer O’Connell defeat encumbent Conservative Corneliu Chisu, by more than 4,700 votes, with 49 per cent of total balloting. NDP candidate Pamela Downward came in third with nearly 10 per cent of ballots, according to the CBC Canada Votes website.

Liberal victor says new PM did not stoop to attack campaign

Celebrating victory in the Oct. 19 federal election, the Scarborough-Guildwood Liberal candidate suggested his leader could have been much nastier in his attack against the incumbent Tories. John McKay celebrated his seventh re-election with a victory party at his campaign office on Monday night. About 50 members of the community came to show their support as the results were being tallied.

Conservative candidate bows to Liberal victory in GTA

In his loss to the incumbent in Scarborough-Guildwood, Monday night, the Conservative challenger acknowledged what had been a national trend. Conservative Chuck Konkel won nearly 27 per cent of votes in the federal election, according to the CBC’s Canada Votes website, but could not overcome Liberal John McKay’s commanding 60 per cent of the balloting.

In loss, NDP candidate calls for alternative voting system

In his loss to the Liberal candidate in Scarborough Centre, Monday night, the NDP candidate called for a change from the first past the post federal election system. Wilson conceded defeat to Salma Zahid, who won the riding with a 5,661 plurality, or more than 51 per cent of the vote. Roxanne James, the Conservative, came in second with about 30 per cent of the ballots, while Wilson polled about 12 per cent for third place. In losing, Wilson called for a new voting system.
