Shut out in their last two games, the Toronto Maple Leafs hope that a visit from rival Ottawa on Tuesday will help boost the offence. For a team relying on only one legitimate scorer, the rest of the forward group is looking to make life difficult for the opposition goaltenders, something they were unable to do against Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist in back-to-back 2-0 losses to Boston and the New York Rangers, respectively.
After winning its opening two games of the season for the first time since 1999, Toronto had been abuzz after Saturday’s 5-1 win over provincial-rival Ottawa. As quick as fans of the blue-and-white were to get excited about a franchise that has not given much to cheer for since the lockout, many outsiders were mocking those Leaf supporters for planning the parade route.
On Saturday night, the rivalry between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs opens a new chapter in the 2010-11 season. Since the Leafs and Sens became division rivals in 1998, the teams have played many heated regular season match-ups and have met four times in the playoffs, with the blue-and-white coming out on top in each series.
Last season, four teams from the Northeast Division made it to the playoffs, leaving only the Maple Leafs on the outside looking in. This year there are two front-runners to make it back (in Boston and Buffalo), and three bubble teams (in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa).
