Consistency key to reliever Zac Fuesser’s future with Pirates

BRADENTON, Fla. — Tuesday was the first day of spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a day that featured more than 100 players invited to camp at Pirate City. Among them was left-handed pitcher Zac Fuesser. Fuesser — or Fuse, as he is known in the Pirates organization — looks forward to burning batters from the bullpen. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound South Carolina native is a man of few words, and prefers to let his pitching do the talking.

Pirates have dark horse in reliever Ryan Beckman

BRADENTON, Fla. — Ryan Beckman is looking to build on last year’s comeback season with a little help from his Pittsburgh Pirates organization. The right-hander spent the entire 2012 season rehabbing after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was fortunate enough to be able to rehab with a few major leaguers, most notably Charlie Morton, who underwent the same exact surgery at the same time as Beckman.

Pirates’ farmhand Crumlich looks for consistency

BRADENTON, Fla. — Looking to continue to move up the ladder, Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand D.J. Crumlich understands that consistency is the key to his success. After a successful campaign at the University of California Irvine campus, the middle infielder was a short-season New York-Penn League all-star and his team’s MVP award winner. After two promotions last season, he hopes to progress and carry over his momentum into this year.

Pirates’ Orlando Castro hopes to establish himself as a prospect

BRADENTON, Fla. – Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand and native of Honduras, Orlando Castro, has added motivation to play in the major leagues – he wants to make some history. The left-handed pitcher is not looking to set any great records, such as most wins or strikeouts, or the lowest ERA. Castro’s home country isn’t known for its baseball talent, so just making his way to the highest level would be a huge accomplishment for the 21-year-old.
