Committee votes to keep wind gauge on Lake Ontario

Despite local opposition to the city’s installation of a wind gauge offshore at the Scarborough bluffs, the anemometer will remain in Lake Ontario until fall of 2012. Responding to some of his constituents’ concerns, during a meeting of executive committee at Toronto city hall on Tuesday, Scarborough East Coun. Paul Ainslie had proposed to remove the device. However, Coun. David Shiner worried that removal of the device would waste more money.

Scarborough Hospital saves green by going green

The servers may be virtual but the savings are real. The Scarborough Hospital, Canada’s largest urban community hospital, invested more than $200,000 into a greening initiative earlier this year. The project, which is expected to save the hospital $50,000 a year, saw a reduction in the number of physical computer servers in the building.

Ice Energy cools demand of T.O.

One of the ways to save polar bears from a melting climate, according to the Toronto Zoo, is for the city to become a chillier place.

Introducing ice energy to the city, the Zoo is showcasing a new system that replaces air conditioners with stored ice blocks. Using ice to reduce peak demands and stave off the effects of a changing climate in the Arctic. If the Zoo has their way, this could be the way of the future for Toronto.

On Oct. 9th at this year’s Fall for the Rouge Affair the brand new ePole, a hybrid solar and wind powered turbine, was centre stage and had residents wondering why the government wasn’t looking into building more of these revolutionary turbines.

Symposium series aims to clear the air on climate change

When Peter Love set out to explain the connection between climate change and new electricity conservation regulations in Ontario, he knew the importance of keeping it simple. “I don’t give many numbers when I talk to people,” he said from the podium, “A lot of people, I know, are confused (about climate change).”
