Hockey lives once again at the place that was formerly beloved as Maple Leaf Gardens. And though visiting forward Kevin George was the one to score the building’s first goal in 13 years, the home team Ryerson Rams would narrowly prevail 5-4 over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks.
The roar will be loud, but expect it to get louder as the season progresses for the youthful York Lion’s basketball team.

Scarborough’s four day Don Montgomery Memorial Hockey Tournament, which wound up Jan. 16, was a successful one for the Scarborough Bandits and West Hill Golden Hawks organizations. Three teams from the area won in their age groups and two more reached the finals.
In a presentation detailing the expansion plans, architect Richard Dabrus of Wong Gregersen Dabrus Architects outlined an illustration of what the Leaside community can expect. Some features include a new ramp, lobby, ice rink, six team rooms and seating for 200 people.
Head coach Kevin Jeffers said that with the constantly changing rosters in high school basketball – players graduating or transferring schools – his team is currently experiencing a period of self-discovery.
“They haven’t found their identity yet,” he said. “Once they get comfortable in their roles, we’ll be fine.”
