Jim Cotter stays undefeated at Grand Slam of Curling event

Team Cotter was able to pick up a point in an extra end to beat team Bottcher 5-4 in draw seven of the Masters curling event in Truro, N.S.

With the hammer in the ninth end, Jim Cotter was able to make the easy shot to take a point and the victory over the young team from Alberta.

In a crazy eighth end with the score 4-3 in favour of team Cotter (2-0), there was a total of eight stones sitting in the house going into the final two rocks. With the hammer and his opponent sitting two, Brendan Bottcher was able to take one point to tie the game up and force the extra end.

Although Cotter struggled to get his own game going early in the contest, hie was able to pick up his play, finshing the game curling 81-percent.

Facing one with the last rock in the first end, Cotter attempted to raise his own stone into the shot rock to take two points. It was a guard sitting in front of the house that proved costly to him, as he grazed it and threw off the line of his rock, giving up a steal of one early.

With Cotter sitting three in the second, the Alberta skip would make the shot of the match for team Bottcher (1-1), turning the tables and taking out all of the yellow stones to sit a trio of his own.

However, Bottcher would miss with his final stone, setting up the skip from British Columbia with a chance to pick up a pair. Not unlike the first end, Cotter would once again not capitalize, missing a draw of his own and only taking the single point to tie the game up at one.

After Alberta’s final shot in the fourth end curled too deep, Cotter was finally able to make his last rock, taking out two of team Bottcher’s stones to take two points, and the 3-2 lead into the break.

Bottcher was trying to get off to a fast start in the second half, but his last shot picked something on the ice in an attempt to pick up two points with an easy draw, and the team was forced to settle with just the single point, which proved to be a turning point in the match.
