The Toronto Observer was one of the country’s first online student newspapers when it hit the Internet more than two decades ago.

In recent years, it has been recognized as one of the best college or university news websites in Ontario, placing first in the 2014 Ontario Community Newspapers Association’s (OCNA) Better Newspapers Competition awards, handed out in 2015.

In the 2021, 2020, 2016 and 2013 competitions, it took the second-place award in the same category, while it placed third in 2011.

The East York Observer

The East York Observer first hit the streets of East York half a century ago.

“Centennial College started the Observer in 1972 as a student ‘laboratory’ for the first college journalism program in the province — and as outreach to the community around the college,” reads an editor’s note marking the paper’s 40th anniversary in the Dec. 7, 2012, issue.

In 2016, The East York Observer was recognized with an Honourable Mention in the 2015 OCNA Better Newspapers Competition.

The final print issue of The East York Observer rolled off the press in December 2018.
