Canadian Forces soldier Matthew Jackson finds simple satisfaction in his work with artillery. “They are very satisfying to fire,” he said. “Although it makes me sound like a child, they are very loud and very fun to fire.”
For Sylvia Rooker the war in Afghanistan came down to winning over the women civilians. “I got to know seven women there,” she said. “I would learn to speak their language and they loved that. They were not used to being treated with respect.”
The Holocaust robbed Arnold Friedman of his childhood and destroyed his family. “I can’t remember my mother’s affection, although she remained in my vision the same young woman as I last saw her,” he said.
When the Second World War broke out, the choice for Hugh Brown was straightforward. “Many chose to join the Navy. Others wanted to be in the Army,” he said. “Being part of the Air Force just attracted me,” Brown said.
“I think it’s important to learn a bit about our local heritage and our local ecology. The ravines are a very important aspect of Toronto,” said Taylor Stone. “We have the largest ravine system of any city in the world. Getting Torontonians to appreciate it and appreciate that there is this potential to experience nature right in our backyards is important.”
Enid Elford’s wartime experience gave her access to guns, but nobody was shooting back. “I was in what they called Tin Pan Alley, where they worked on the Bren-gun magazines,” Elford said. “They had to bang them into shape and it was noisy.”
A can of Spam transports Bud Flavelle back in memory to when he was 18 years old and a crewman aboard a Second World War warship. “One of my shipmates and I had been making Spam sandwiches one night and inadvertently left the can out,” he said. “It was one of those with teeth that ran around it … When my friend went to get up (from his hammock) a wave hit (the ship) and he landed on his butt on this can of spam. He just yelled like hell.”
The Art Guild of Scarborough celebrated the 50th anniversary of its fall show on Nov. 3-4. The event included over 250 works of art, produced by the 175 guild members.
