New art barn at Dawes Road ‘confusing’: residents

At the corner of Dawes Road and Victoria Park Avenue, a nearly completed barn-like structure stands at the centre of a small island of grass.

The structure, installed under the city of Toronto’s public art program, pays homage to the older days of the area when this corner of East York was all farm land, not a busy urban intersection.

Street nurse critical of city during cold alert

A former street nurse says the City of Toronto doesn’t do enough to assist the homeless in cold weather.

For the past week, Toronto has faced its coldest temperatures in over two years, with three consecutive cold weather alerts. Once a cold weather alert is issued the city relaxes its shelter restrictions and takes in more homeless off the streets. The city also opens up a reserve of 172 shelter beds during extreme cold weather alerts to help ease crowding. However, street nurse Cathy Crowe believes city services in such emergencies fall short. “The city barely calls a cold weather alert,” Crowe said. “They have to be pressured through the use of media and lobby groups… Then, they finally add beds to an overcrowded system; they aren’t really beds, more or less cots.”

There were lights, bells, trinkets, noise if someone won, and people yelling. They made the atmosphere conducive for you to really have a good time.”

City plan to investigate west-end basement flooding

One night in the summer of 2005, Darrell Bricker heard a strange sound coming from his basement. When he investigated, he discovered what he called as a “geyser” of water coming up from the floor. “I tried to stop it but I obviously couldn’t,” he said. “I went and bought a wet-dry shop vac. I spent the better part of the night vacuuming this water and dumping out the bucket.”
