Jon Burnside, who was endorsed earlier in the campaign by mayor-elect John Tory, beat out incumbent John Parker by more than 3,000 votes. He ended up garnering over 42 per cent of the ballots cast, with a total of 9,415 to Parker’s 6,167.

Expert says premier’s gender makes no difference

A University of Toronto says having a female premier will not change the nature of Ontario politics. On Saturday, Kathleen Wynne won the Liberal leadership and will become Ontario’s 25th premier. She defeated principal contender Sandra Pupatello and four other candidates during the convention held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Maple Leaf Gardens. Nelson Wiseman, a U of T political science professor, says the leader’s gender does not matter.,“Having a female premier to me does not make much of a difference,” he said.

Wynne, who represents Don Valley West, was provincial education minister from 2006 until just last year, when McGuinty moved her to the transportation portfolio. Now she’ll serve as minister of Aboriginal Affairs as well as minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

East York sticks with its MPPs

Liberal Kathleen Wynne lived up to her name, winning with 24,454 votes or 58.3 per cent of the vote in Don Valley West. She easily defeated Andrea Mandel-Campbell, bringing in nearly twice as many votes as the 11,626 claimed by the Conservative candidate.

Second time not the charm for Dhanani

Dhanani lost his initial 2006 bid for council to John Parker, a scenario repeated again tonight. Dhanani received 28 per cent of the total vote, with 5,627 ballots, losing to incumbent Parker by just 576 votes and runner-up Jon Burnside by fewer still.
