The winner in Monday night’s federal election in the riding of Scarborough Centre has pledged financial support of jobs for young people as a priority. In the Oct. 19 vote, Liberal candidate Salma Zahid defeated Conservative incumbent Roxanne James. Zahid polled 51.1 per cent of ballots cast, according to the CBC Canada Votes website. James finished in second place with just over 30 per cent of votes, while NDP Alex Wilson earned 11.8 per cent of ballots.
The Liberal party’s reign continues in Toronto Central, but for the newcomer PC candidate it’s about the long haul. The Liberal incumbent Glen Murray defeated Progressive Conservative Martin Abell in the provincial election, Thursday night, in Toronto Centre.
Rob Ford’s West End mentality may have worked for his Etobicoke constituents, but it certainly isn’t commuting to Scarborough, in the aftermath of his sweeping election.
Ford garnered almost 50 per cent of the vote Monday while George Smitherman and Joe Pantalone garnered 35 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively. In the end, Ford was able to motivate more voters to get out and support him.
“Toronto is open for business again,” proclaimed Rob Ford as news of his victory in the mayor's race broke just minutes after the polls closed at 8 p.m. “The party with taxpayers' money is over, ladies and gentlemen.”
After a close race, George Smitherman lost Toronto's mayoral election. He lost to his main opponent Rob Ford, who will lead the city for the next four years.
Early favourite Rob Ford is taking the lead in the mayoral election polls with about 50 per cent of the total votes and major news outlets are already calling it a win for Ford.
