Head shots changing the face of women’s hockey

Karolina Urban remembers most of the game. It was the last of her 2008-09 season. As captain of the University of Toronto women’s hockey team, she followed the puck on the ice. “The puck popped out and I got it,” she said. “The girl … just smoked me so hard that I twisted in the air before I landed.” That was Urban’s first concussion. She has suffered two since. They haven’t discouraged her.

U of T TAs to remain on the job as tentative deal reached

A strike by University of Toronto teaching assistants has been avoided for now. After an eight-month-long negotiation battle, a tentative agreement between U of T and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 3902 is now up for a ratification vote by TAs.

Toronto copy store owner found guilty of illegal reprography sales

The owner of T & T Copy Centre in Toronto has learned the seriousness of copyright infringement. Due Tinh Nguyen pleaded guilty to contempt of court on Jan. 13, and was sentenced to six months in prison. He was found in possession of illegally reproduced university course packages in 2010, after a prior conviction in 2008, when he was ordered to pay $132,000.

Some of Toronto’s best minds in particle physics are hoping 2012 will be the year they achieve a big bang of their own, including a potential Nobel Prize in physics. The physicists, from the University of Toronto and York University, have a shot at discovering one of science’s Holy Grails, the Higgs boson – also known as the “God particle”.
