The birth of a pothole

The roads in the city of Toronto are getting a face-lift after a harsh winter. This is how a pothole forms.

1) Water seeps through asphalt cracks caused by traffic.
2) During winter water freezes and expands causing the road’s asphalt to split even more.
3) Water melts during spring leaving a hole in the asphalt.
4) Heavy traffic flow erodes the road even more.
