Community safety organizations in Toronto are kicking-off a four-day awareness campaign on lethal driving.
Operation Shield, a group of four community safety organizations including the Toronto Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police Toronto and Aurora Detachments, OPP Highway Enforcement Team, and York Regional Police Service Traffic Unit, are all working together to raise awareness on the top four reasons that drivers are killed on municipal and provincial highways.
These factors have been dubbed The Big Four, which includes aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, and unrestrained occupants in motor vehicles.
Operation Shield kicked off the campaign this morning in the Fairview Mall parking lot, located at 1800 Sheppard Ave. E.
The operation will last for four days, changing intermittently on the following days:
– Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014
– Friday, Oct. 24, 2014
– Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014
– Friday, Nov. 7, 2014
Approximately 30 police officers will take part in the event to ensure the highest level of police visibility, mostly during long commuter periods, along both directions of Highway 404 from 16th Ave. in Markham, to the Highway 401.
Officers will also take advantage of this campaign, and use it to engage drivers in education and enforcement ethics, especially towards complying with High Occupancy Vehicle lanes.
