2023 By-Election for Mayor: A ballot for youth

Engaging young voters in elections is pivotal to democracy. What are some of the biggest issues affecting youth in Toronto?

Experts say one of the biggest factors affecting the low voter turnout in the 2022 Toronto municipal election was related to youth participation.

Young voters (18-24) have historically participated less in federal elections compared to older demographics. But their participation is essential for the functioning of our democratic system.

To ensure that our demographic gets the election information they need, we bring extensive coverage surrounding Toronto’s mayoral race to our readers.

For the past month, journalism students from Centennial College’s Entrepreneurial Reporting course pursued multimedia stories for the Toronto Observer, in anticipation of Toronto’s 2023 By-Election for Mayor.

As young people ourselves, we highlighted some of the key issues faced by young Torontonians today — from housing affordability to transit safety and fair representation in municipal politics — and investigated lesser-known stories, like satirical campaigns and canine candidates.

Watch our candidate videos, which spotlight the ideas and visions of some of the more interesting of the 102 candidates running for mayor of Toronto — and check out our pre-election and election coverage on the website, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok

We hope that our stories inspire you to become this election’s game-changers and make sure your voice is heard.
