The Scarborough arts scene has been more than active this spring as residents are re-introduced to local beauty by two galleries. The Bluffs Gallery, located at 1859 Kingston Rd. is the centre of all the activity. This spring, the gallery is hosting a members’ exhibition to showcase local artists’ work on abstract and traditional art.

Opera classes for fun and the future

Dean Burry holds up the fist-sized air sac. His audience is too young to know how it works, so he demonstrates. “The classic way to use it is to put it down on someone’s seat,” he said. Then, as Burry sits down on the air sac (whoopee cushion), the sound of passing gas makes the children laugh. “See, it’s funny.”

When organ donation is the only alternative

Sandra Holdsworth remembered being awake at two o’clock in the morning she began writing letters to her husband and children while lying in her hospital bed. She was 28 years old when she found out she was ill with an incurable disease. “I’ve been gone a long time trying to figure out what was wrong with me,” she said. “So it was sort of more not as a relief, but then figuring out well I at least now know what’s wrong with me and how to deal with it.”

DIY, traditional home sales both strong despite competition

Teresa Estevez took on the task of selling her Mississauga home privately after finding the price of hiring a real estate agent to be more than she’d anticipated. “I can’t afford to pay an agent right now because of the high commission,” she said. “We invested all of this money into the house. … If I was to get an agent, I would be losing [money].” She’s not alone.

Reduce the salt!

A recent study from the Canadian Medical Association Journal has shown that major fast food restaurants are too salty, including some of their healthy options like salads.It might be worthwhile for these restaurants to completely reduce salt from their foods than try and expand their menu to options that still don’t offer a healthier alternative.
