Campaign intensifies to get vote for non-citizens

Florian Sperber is a student. He emigrated to Canada from Austria 18 years ago. He cannot vote in Toronto’s municipal election, but feels he should have that right. “I believe I have earned the privilege to vote,” Sperber said. “The winning party effects me just the same as any other person, so why shouldn’t I have the right to decide who I want to represent me?”

Commuter transit service remains frustrating issue

Council contenders rely on motivated, strong campaign teams

On a sunny Thursday afternoon, Helen Papadakis, 72, organizes the papers, business cards and flyers laid on the front desk at the John Papadakis campaign office in Ward 29. “I open the office, answer calls and speak with Greek people who don’t speak English,” she said. It’s part of her role in her son’s campaign to listen to constituents’ problems and to establish a general rapport with voters ahead of the Oct. 27 municipal election.
