Early morning fire wakes East York residents

Firefighters were called to the scene of a house that was engulfed in flames at Pape and Cosburn avenues early Tuesday morning. The fire originated in the basement of a house on Torrens Avenue at around 7:45 a.m.

Toronto writers draw inspiration from fellow artists

It’s small, black and bound with leather. A couple of pages are torn, and there are a few ink smudges here and there, but most of the work inside consists of scribbles. It sometimes even gets lost. Cavel Janel has carried this journal around since she was a teenager, and last month she took it to a library in Toronto. “It has all of my best and worst work in it,” Janel said. “I take it with me wherever I go. Whenever I feel like I have an idea about a story, I know I can just take it out and write in it.”

A little goes a long way

When Anisa made her way across the balance beam at the East York Gymnastics Club, her mother Tabassom Momtaheni was both ecstatic and proud. “It’s great for me,” Anisa’s mother said. “I never thought she was going to walk by herself.” What made this moment so remarkable was that Anisa, 6, had a brain tumour, which affected her balance and co-ordination, and made walking a nearly impossible task. But with a helping hand, Anisa was able to make her way across the beam. That helping hand belonged to Amanda Cyr.

When collecting becomes a health hazard

Even when Linda Peters’ 1,000-square-foot basement suite was stacked to the ceiling with furniture and 11 animals lived in the same space with her, she didn’t recognize that she had a problem. “I would drag couches four times bigger than me for blocks down the street home,” she said, “stuff (them) through the front door and stack (them) all up. … I didn’t even realize there was a problem.”
