Defeated NDP candidate blames the electorate fear factor

The NDP candidate, defeated by the Liberal running in the Scarborough North riding, says that fear played a major role in the public’s decision. Liberal Shaun Chen won the riding, Monday night, with 48 per cent of the votes. Conservative candidate Ravinder Malhi placed second with 27 per cent, followed by NDP candidate Rathika Sitsabaiesan with 22 per cent.

New TDSB rules ‘fantastic’ for transgender students

Things have come a long way for transgender students in the eight years since Jade Hines came out, she says. The Toronto District School Board recently implemented a new policy for the accommodation of transgender and gender non-conforming students and staff. “The new guidelines for accommodating trans students (are) fantastic,” said Hines, a 25-year-old transgender student at Ryerson University.

Province won’t pick up TDSB byelection tab

The Ontario government will not foot the bill for a byelection to elect new Toronto District School Board trustees, as two seats on the board are empty following the election of Michael Coteau and Soo Wong to Queen’s Park on Oct. 6.
