Liberal MP John McKay held his victory party at his campaign office on Kingston Road, Monday night, when he celebrated his seventh consecutive re-election, and fifth consecutive in the Scarborough-Guildwood riding.
The winner in the Parkdale-High Park riding, in Monday night’s federal vote, has put health care at the top of his to-do list as the new MP. On Monday, Parkdale-High Park constituents elected Liberal candidate Arif Virani over NDP incumbent, Peggy Nash. Virani attracted just over 42 per cent of votes, according to the CBC’s Canada Votes website, while Nash garnered just over 40 per cent of ballots.
The winner in Monday’s federal election campaign in Toronto Centre says he ran because he was inspired by constituents in his riding. Liberal Bill Morneau, now the MP for Toronto-Centre, celebrated his victory Monday night at the Paint Box Bistro, in Regent Park. About 100 supporters attended the reception. He attracted over 57 per cent of the votes, according to the CBC Canada Votes website, while his nearest competitor, NDP candidate Linda McQuaig captured nearly 27 per cent.
The riding of Davenport has been reclaimed by the Liberals after one term of NDP leadership, as Julie Dzerowicz defeated incumbent Andrew Cash by a narrow margin. With 155 of 192 polls reporting, Dzerowicz was victorious, taking 45.1 per cent of the votes, ahead of Cash at 40.2 per cent – a difference of about 1,800 votes.
The NDP candidate, defeated by the Liberal running in the Scarborough North riding, says that fear played a major role in the public’s decision. Liberal Shaun Chen won the riding, Monday night, with 48 per cent of the votes. Conservative candidate Ravinder Malhi placed second with 27 per cent, followed by NDP candidate Rathika Sitsabaiesan with 22 per cent.
NDP incumbent Craig Scott has been defeated in Jack Layton’s old riding of Toronto-Danforth by Liberal Julie Dabrusin in an unexpected turn of events. In a close race for the East York riding, Dabrusin was able to edge out Scott by a margin of 1,797 votes – 22,297 votes for Dabrusin to 20,500 for Scott.
The winning candidate in Monday night’s federal election in Newmarket-Aurora credits a positive campaign for the victory. After 78 days, the longest campaign in modern Canadian history, the residents of Newmarket-Aurora chose Liberal candidate Kyle Peterson, who earned more than 45 per cent of votes, according to the CBC Canada Votes website.
NDP candidate Laura Casselman finished a distant third in Scarborough-Guildwood but her family has no doubt “she’ll keep going.”
