Work for youth is new MP’s priority

The winner in Monday night’s federal election in the riding of Scarborough Centre has pledged financial support of jobs for young people as a priority. In the Oct. 19 vote, Liberal candidate Salma Zahid defeated Conservative incumbent Roxanne James. Zahid polled 51.1 per cent of ballots cast, according to the CBC Canada Votes website. James finished in second place with just over 30 per cent of votes, while NDP Alex Wilson earned 11.8 per cent of ballots.


Mendicino returns Eglinton-Lawrence to Liberal fold

It was a vote for change, not just for the nation, but also for the communities of Eglinton-Lawrence riding. After the polls closed on Monday night, over 80 supporters of Liberal Party candidate Marco Mendicino gathered at Seoul House restaurant in North York to celebrate his win for the riding as well as the victory for the Liberal Party.

‘Liberal Party deserves this win,’ Conservative candidate says

Following the trend of winning numbers across the nation, Mississauga Centre saw a Liberal victory too, and another loss for the Conservative Party. Liberal Omar Alghabra captured 56.1 per cent votes cast, leading Conservative Julius Tiangson, who trailed behind with 32.5 per cent. Farheen Khan of the NDP and Linh Nguyen of the Green Party followed with 9.1 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively.

Incumbent in York-Simcoe bucks Liberal sweep

The re-elected Conservative in York-Simcoe riding, in Monday night’s federal election, says Canada now faces a challenge. Supporters for the Conservative party incumbent, Peter Van Loan, never wavered in their certainty of his re-election, even in the face of early Liberal momentum.

In third place, NDP candidate offers to assist Liberal winner

Uxbridge offered her assistance to the elected Liberal. The newly configured riding, northeast of Toronto, saw Liberal Jennifer O’Connell defeat encumbent Conservative Corneliu Chisu, by more than 4,700 votes, with 49 per cent of total balloting. NDP candidate Pamela Downward came in third with nearly 10 per cent of ballots, according to the CBC Canada Votes website.

Scarborough-Guildwood Tory says loss is end of the line

The Conservative candidate in Scarborough-Guildwood bid farewell to supporters, Monday night, on this his final attempt to upset the Liberal stronghold in the riding. Chuck Konkel conceded to Liberal incumbent John McKay at an election night reception at the JC Banquet Hall in Scarborough. Konkel, who earned 26.5 per cent of the vote to McKay’s 60 per cent, thanked supporters for their commitment during one of the longest campaigns in Canada’s history.

Candidate credits youth vote ‘showing up’

The winning candidate in Monday night’s election in the riding of Scarborough-Rouge Park credits the young members of his party for his victory. Liberal candidate Gary Anandasangaree held a reception for his supporters following his win over chief rivals, Conservative candidate Leslyn Lewis and New Democrat K.M. Shanthikumar. Anandasangaree accumulated more than 60 per cent of the vote, according to the CBC’s Canada Votes website, while Lewis attracted 27 per cent of the vote and Shanthikumar, 10 per cent.
