As announced in the throne speech, Ontario’s Liberal government will provide an eight per cent rebate on hydro costs, equal to the provincial share of the 13 per cent HST. Eligible rural customers will receive a rebate of 20 per cent each month, according to the throne speech. Laurie Scott, Progressive Conservative citizenship, immigration and international trade critic, argued in question period on Thursday that the rebate will not be enough for low income Ontarians.
“In my riding (there are) thousands of people who can’t cope with the stress of making their hydro payments,” Scott said.

The Liberal victor in Monday night’s federal election vote in the Eglinton-Lawrence riding reaffirmed his commitment to public transit in the constituency. In a tight race with the Conservative Joe Oliver, on Oct.19, Marco Mendicino came out the winner, accumulating nearly 50 per cent of the riding’s votes, according to the CBC’s Canada Votes website. Oliver garnered just over 41 per cent, while the NDP candidate Andrew Thomson attracted just over six per cent.
The winning Liberal candidate in Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, says the newly configured riding made the race even tougher. While Leona Alleslev won the riding, it was by a margin of just over two per cent. She won 47.3 per cent of the vote, while her Conservative opponent, Costas Menegakis, garnered 45.2 per cent. The winner in the Parkdale-High Park riding, in Monday night’s federal vote, has put health care at the top of his to-do list as the new MP. Virani attracted just over 42 per cent of votes, according to the CBC’s Canada Votes website, while Nash garnered just over 40 per cent of ballots.
The winner in Monday’s federal election campaign in Toronto Centre says he ran because he was inspired by constituents in his riding. Liberal Bill Morneau, now the MP for Toronto-Centre, celebrated his victory Monday night at the Paint Box Bistro, in Regent Park. About 100 supporters attended the reception. He attracted over 57 per cent of the votes, according to the CBC Canada Votes website, while his nearest competitor, NDP candidate Linda McQuaig captured nearly 27 per cent.
